|CONCERNS OVER HSE STATISTICS FOR RECYCLING SECTOR - 31 October 2008 at 11:22|
Published on October 29, the 2007-08 figures show that major and fatal injuries to employees involved in recycling and waste management combined rose by 32% in the period from 2004-05 to 2007-08.
HSE chair Judith Hackitt expressed concern over the performance of the waste and recycling sector. This is despite statistics produced by the recovered paper industry showing that the number of injuries within our industry, has fallen over the same period. It has to be remembered that the HSE statistics include data from landfill sites, waste management sites, and kerbside collection, as well as all types of recycling sites including metals. Changes in reporting procedures could also have affected the results as accidents incolving council employees are now being recorded as occuring within a particular sector - such as refuse collection - rather than under the broader definition of 'public administration'.
